What is a woman of Substance? The website, SWSG, quotes it as, “a woman of power, a woman of influence and a woman of meaning” which conjures up visions of female executives aggressively climbing the corporate ladder, influencing the likes of other powerful people in the world, and suggests that anything less means you are somehow, well, less. However, Lauren Kearney, the author goes on to explain, that we should find a way to be happy how we are, with who we are. She’s right, of course,
But I also believe that a “woman of substance” is an ever changing idea that we as women are redefining every day of our lives through every stage of our lives. The very act of caring for those in our families, kids, spouses, significant others, as well as aging parents, ailing siblings, or anyone in our extended family, as well as neighbors, friends and coworkers, can be daunting and exhausting at times, but is, I believe what shapes us and our ability to be “of substance.” With age comes more wisdom, more patience and more experience.
I find women over the age of 50 a fascinating, and dynamic group to know. And I want them to be seen, because very often, they are not. Don’t let the second half go by without a portrait session for the woman of substance that you are.
