Henri Cartier-Bresson said, 'In a portrait, I am looking for the silence in somebody.' I love that quote. We go about our daily lives usually trying to be anything but ourselves. We wear many hats, we adjust who we are depending on who we are with, and sometimes we get so used to it that we never let down and just be ourselves.
When someone steps in front of my camera, my goal is to capture the person underneath it all. So often clients look at their images and say they finally see their real selves, relaxed, unbothered, unhurried. That is what I look for in a portrait session: the real laugh, the real seriousness, the real smile.
Because when we want someone to remember us, we want them to remember who we really are, documented for generations. Your great-great-granddaughter may never get the chance to know you, but an honest photograph will tell her something about you long after you are gone. That is the gift of a portrait, and it is priceless.
