Fabulous Over 50: Why Portrait Sessions for Women Over 50 Are Having a Moment

Ask a woman over 50 when she was last in a photo she actually liked, and watch her think hard. She is the one who takes the pictures, plans the holidays, and stays behind the camera at every birthday. There are thousands of photos of everyone she loves and almost none of her.
That is exactly the gap my Fabulous Over 50 sessions exist to close. And I am not the only one who has noticed it. Women in this chapter are finally booking portraits for themselves, and it is one of the most rewarding things I get to photograph.
Why now
A few things shifted at once.
This generation grew up being told the spotlight belonged to younger women, and a lot of them quietly believed it. Now they are looking around and deciding they are done waiting to feel seen. Many are at a turning point, the last kid moved out, a big birthday landed, a marriage ended or a new chapter began, a business took off. A portrait session marks the moment.
There is also a simpler reason. They look great and they know it, and they are tired of pretending otherwise. Confidence at this age is a different, steadier thing than it was at 25. The camera loves it.
What a session actually feels like
The number one fear I hear is some version of "I do not photograph well anymore." I understand where it comes from, and I promise it is not true. It usually just means no one has photographed you with care and good light in a long time.
So that is what I do. I direct everything. You will never be left standing there wondering what to do with your hands. I guide the posing to flatter you, I use light that is kind, and I coach the expressions so they feel like you on a good day rather than a forced smile. When something looks beautiful, and it will, I turn the camera around and show you. Watching a woman see herself clearly, maybe for the first time in years, and go quiet, that never gets old.
It is also genuinely fun. There is usually music, often a glass of something, always laughing. Most clients tell me afterward that they were dreading it and then did not want it to end.
What to wear
You have spent decades learning what makes you feel good. Trust that.
- Wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself, whether that is a sharp blazer, a flowing dress, jeans and a great top, or all three across the session.
- Choose colors you love and that love you back. Jewel tones and rich neutrals tend to flatter beautifully.
- Bring a few options and one wildcard, something a little bolder than your everyday. Many women surprise themselves with the bold one.
- Add the pieces that are yours, the jewelry with a story, the heels, the scarf. Detail makes it personal.
I will help you plan all of it once we have a date. You will not be guessing alone.
The real reasons women book
Every session has a story behind it. Some of the ones I have photographed:
A woman who finished chemo and wanted proof of her strength. A newly divorced woman reintroducing herself to her own life. A grandmother who wanted images her grandkids would have one day. A business owner who needed photos as powerful as she is. And plenty who booked for no reason at all except that it was finally their turn.
You do not need a milestone or a reason. Wanting it is enough.
This is not vanity. It is a record.
Here is what I wish more women believed. Your kids and grandkids will not treasure the photos where you are tucked at the edge of the frame, half hidden. They will treasure the one where you looked straight at the camera, fully yourself, fully there. Being in the picture is a gift to the people who love you, not just to yourself.
You have spent a long time making sure everyone else was captured. It is your turn to be the one in the frame.
Frequently asked questions
I do not photograph well anymore. Can you really get a good photo of me? Yes, and this is the most common worry I hear. It almost always means you have not been photographed with proper direction and light in a long time. I guide every pose and expression, and clients are routinely stunned by their own images.
What do I wear for an over 50 portrait session? Wear what makes you feel most like yourself, in colors you love. Bring a few options including one bolder choice. I help you plan outfits before the session so nothing is left to chance.
Do I need a special occasion to book? No. Many women book to mark a milestone, and just as many book simply because it is finally their turn. Wanting the photos is reason enough.
Where do you photograph these sessions? In and around Charlottesville, in studio or on location depending on the look you want. We choose together based on the feel you are after.
